11 JUL "Where has 500 MILES TO MEMPHIS been all my life? This Cincinnati-based band's debut full-length Sunshine In A Shot Glass is simply fucking amazing. Review over. But seriously, this album is filled with the sort of bittersweet country punk that both punks and rednecks can't help but love. Seriously. It's instrumentally ambitious but never approaches wankery as fiddles, slide guitar, pedal steel, organs, and banjos sit alongside churning guitar-bass-drums arrangements. Now when an album is this good (and Sunshine In A Shot Glass is) I hesitate to make easy comparisons but just to give you an idea 500 MILES TO MEMPHIS sounds sorta like Lucero but with a little more twang, bigger breakdowns, and less gravelly vocals. It's whiskey-soaked, twangy bluegrass, punk-infused country rock. Honestly, Sunshine In A Shot Glass is instantly captivating and needs no time to grow; tender at times and boiling lava hot at others. It is rare (if not impossible) that an album can be well-suited for both line-dancing and mosh pits, but somehow this one is. Near perfect." - Can You See The Sunset
09 JUL "There are times where you only need to hear 30 seconds of an album to realize that it's going to blow you away. Moving Mountains provide one of those moments with Pneuma, one of those rare and indelible moments that remind and affirm why it is you listen to music in the first place. This cross-genre effort succeeds in every possible regard. From the sweeping grandeur of "Aphelion" and mesmerizing beauty of "Fourth," from the raw power and emotion of "Cover the Roots" to the understated melancholy of "Sol Solis," Moving Mountains run the gamut with only one constant remaining through all of the albums 45 minutes -- songwriting ability. The instrumentation sounds bigger by the minute, with crescendos that rivals the best Explosions In the Sky has ever put to plastic. It's entrancing, the ability of this quartet to effortlessly blend styles and sounds for a sound so rich that 'gorgeous' just doesn't seem to do it justice. There's not a track on the album that's less than stellar, but "Grow On, Grow Up, Grow Out" is Moving Mountains at their absolute, spellbinding best. Moving Mountains have crafted a very special album. All you'll need is 30 seconds to agree." - PunkNews

03 MAY "Once every few years an album comes along and defies all expectations and inspires. The last album that had the biggest impact on me was The Appleseed Casts' Low Level Owl. Nothing has ever come close to the genius of those albums...until now. MOVING MOUNTAINS debut Pneuma is an album that stretches itself more artistically than anything that has come along in the past 8 years. Like Sigur Ros, Moving Mountains aren't afraid to take the minimalist approach and let songs simply exist. There is no formula here, just honest, pure and passionate songwriting. This is an album that will transcend time and genres. Pneuma exists on a higher plain than anything I've heard in quite a long time." - Indie Uprising

19 APR "It only took one thorough listen of "Pneuma" to make an impact on me and validate the hype surrounding this young quartet hailing from Purchase, New York. As an album reviewer who gets hundreds of albums to review every year, I can say that many albums require a few spins before they finally begin to leave a mark on the listener, but "Pneuma" leaves the listener breathless and awe-inspired after the very first track. Giving a track by track analysis of an album such as this would do the band and the album a great diservice as "Pneuma" is best experienced as a cohesive work of art, and dissecting it track by track would strip away some of the intrigue and wonder that makes this album special. Although I will say that "8015" is one of the most devestatingly beautiful songs I have heard in years. Often times many bands are lavished with so much praise that is either unwarranted or creates unobtainable goals for an artist, but Moving Mountains are one of the rare breed of bands who are not only deserving of the attention, but often times exceed the listeners expectations. This band is releasing such outstanding music at such a young age and there is not a doubt in my mind that they will continue to dazzle and amaze fans and critics alike. The next time someone asks me to recommend them some new music, Moving Mountain's "Pneuma" will be the first album I tell them to check out. "Pneuma" is without a doubt a top contender to make the Top 10 in my Best of 2008." - Absolutepunk

06 NOV "The opening track on Emo Diaries 11, the legendary series of compilations released by the equally legendary label Deep Elm is a song by none other than Above Them, and by crikey, is it a blinder. Deep Elm are one of THE legendary underground record labels from the US, right up there with Dischord, No Idea, Jade Tree. The Emo Diaries was a series of compilations back in the day, showcasing up and coming young bands like Samiam, Planes Mistaken for Stars, The Movielife and Jimmy Eat World, to mention a few. The Emo Diaries stopped back in 2004, due to what Deep Elm called the bastardization of the term 'emo' in today's pop culture, as well as the mainstream's stranglehold and subsequent commercialisation of the genre, which placed the focus firmly on the aesthetic... Not the music, the energy or the passion. Now, three years later, Deep Elm are taking back emo. A very high quality compilation." - Die Shellsuit Die.
04 NOV All CDs are now available for ONE LOW PRICE WORLDWIDE: $9.99 CD / $4.99 CDEP / $0.99 Sampler. Non-US orders exclude jewel cases.

19 SEP Thank Your Lucky Stars: "Bow your head and drop your knees to the floor for the Patron Saint of Disappointment, the latest from the underground punk rock poets and philosophers SMALL ARMS DEALER. Back from the grave my favorite Dealer has returned with thirteen new songs of hopelessness, small towns, disappointment and tiny doses of hope. As dark a record as it sounds, Patron Saint of Disappointment tempers every song with a cutting sarcastic wit that somehow softens the blow. Instead of finishing the record and wanting to slit your wrists you find yourself wanting to take that knife and pin all your problems to the wall. There's something about melodic punk rock that pushes you through your ills. In a year that's seen shockingly few truly awesome punk records, I present you Patron Saint of Disappointment. Like a good Dealer, these guys have delivered once again." - Mammoth Press
16 SEP Editor's Pick: "With summer coming to a close, it's almost time to put away those sunshine jams and break out music to get me through another Canadian winter. 500 MILES TO MEMPHIS is the perfect band to help us through that transition. Sunshine In A Shotglass goes just as well with an open window drive through the country as it does with a glass of stout by the wood stove. The band's combination of punk grit and attitude combined with country staples such as a vocal drawl and tales of remorse make the band appeal to Social Distortion's fans as much as Lucero's." - PunkNews
21 JUL COVER YOUR TRACKS: "If only all cover versions were this good. OK, so the source material is second-to-none, but it has forced me to eat some serious humble pie when it comes to recent Deep Elm acts, as the modern roster really steps up to the plate on this covers album. The premise is simple - 11 modern Deep Elm bands cover 11 classic tracks from the vaults. It's a genius idea, and with the likes of Desert City Soundtrack obliterating The Appleseed Cast's 'Marigold And Patchwork' you know you're onto a winner. Better still, Small Arms Dealer put an incendiary device under Cross My Heart's 'Today I Discovered The Word', and Surrounded, who've yet to capture me on record, deliver one of the finest covers you'll ever hear with a striped down take on Starmarket's classic 'Coming From The Cold.' Strictly limited, you'd best get your wallet out." - Big Cheese
15 JUL "500 MILES TO MEMPHIS certainly deserve to have Sunshine In A Shotglass heard by many, many people. Lead vocalist Ryan Malott has a wonderful southern-style drawl to his voice, making the band sound gruff in an absolutely non threatening way. There's a country-esque feel to various tracks while others have a bit of a bluesy influence. The upshot is an album with a number of cracking songs which will have you breaking out a bottle of whiskey, sitting around a camp-fire and wistfully reminiscing about the good old days. Top stuff." - Punktastic
24 JUN Album of the Month: "TRACK A TIGER spellbinds with comforting mellow gold sounds on We Moved Like GhostsŠa release that will undoubtedly be stuck on nonstop rotation in your stereo. Much like Yo La Tengo, Ida, or Low, they plays cushy melodies you will easily cuddle up close to. " - Fake Train
19 JUN "Marked by delicate and delightful female / male vocal harmonies, Track a Tiger's new album We Moved Like Ghosts is a blend of indie pop that you simply must experience. Intricate instrumentation leads the listener down a pathway that's obviously pleasing to the ear but also to the psyche. Clever songwriting and even more ingenious arrangements pepper the disc. The alt-country twists that Track a Tiger employs are alluring and completely intriguing, to say the least. A light atmospheric pop album that is invigorating among its many mysterious allusions, We Moved Like Ghosts washes over you with the laps of ocean water warmed by tender spirits. This is amazing." - Smother
19 MAY "By my count, Deep Elm Records is quietly having yet another good year. Whether releasing dizzying rock (CLAIR DE LUNE), underappreciated post-hardcore (SOUNDS LIKE VIOLENCE), or meditative indie rock (TRACK A TIGER), everything the indie label has touched has been solid. In the case of TRACK A TIGER, the music on We Moved Like Ghosts feels delightfully fresh. While there are pleasant hooks scattered about, a majority of the album steadily creeps along with wistful guitar leads, easy-breezy rhythms, and occasional flares of out-of-the-ordinary instruments (timpani, ebow, banjo). Jim Vallet and Kristina Castaneda add to the eclectic vibe as they utilize soft voices throughout Ghosts. There's no doubting that their music works wonders when one is in a contemplative, dreamy mood. A great pick-up for Deep Elm." - PastePunk
17 MAY COVER YOUR TRACKS: "Deep Elm has put out yet another incredible compilation. Eleven of the label's active bands take songs from the label's alumni and make them their own. Sometimes refreshing, sometimes expected -- always incredible. From Desert City Soundtrack's astonishingly intense rendition of The Appleseed Castıs "Marigold and Pathwork" to Lock and Key's potent interpretation of Brandtson's "Blindspot," all twelve tracks are both a unique twist on fan favorites and a good gauge of two bands in one song for those new to Deep Elm's legendary roster. They're such smooth transitions between bands that these really don't even sound like cover songs. No awkward fit, just a glorious mix of the past and the present of a highly influential record label and its artists." - Absolute Punk
04 JAN EDITOR'S PICK: "Clair De Lune gives musical abstract art-punk new meaning with each and every new track they write. Cathartic life-changing lyrics that once again focus like a laser beam on socially conscious topics like abusive governments, greed, and consumerism. Anthems of guitar glimmer throughout..." - Smother
