REVIEWS:
"With a label like Deep Elm where quality runs extremely far into the roster, it's not surprising that they were able to assemble this compilation of unreleased tunes from some of their more recent signings and a few of their more established acts. One of the smarter elements of this record is that there's ten songs...just the right amount of music for a compilation of this nature. Planes Mistaken For Stars cranks things loose with their fiery tune, Blinders. Seven Storey, Red Animal War and the always awesome Brandtson keep the rock flowing; the latter crafting my favorite tune on the album. Brandtson's unique attachment to strong pop-sensibilities, but dark thoroughfare makes for some heavy songwriting. Starmarket, Dead Red Sea and This Beautiful Mess provide the solid finish that this disc needs. If you like Deep Elm or if you're looking to find out more, you'll dig Unreleased No. 1." - Pastepunk
"Ever since I've had contact with Deep Elm, I've liked what they've put out. Unreleased No. 1 is no exception. This record gives everyone a taste of their new and established acts and is a valuable part of any music collection because you'll never hear these songs anywhere else. Unreleased No. 1 seems to flows in the vein of any classic Deep Elm record; at times it's rough yet soothing, and the other times the music is so intricate and layered that my ears work overtime to keep up with each changing chord and beat. Those are both good things. You'll love this indie rock gem." - Graynoise
"Deep Elm has secured premium choice songs from their bands on this Unreleased collection. Planes Mistaken For Stars begins with the eruptive Blinders, as a mellow build-up quickly gives in to a tense song with turbulent dynamics. Other superior offerings come courtesy of Pop Unknown and Brandtson, who's contribution, Optimist Club, is edgy and aggressive. Five Eight were the most pleasant surprise. This melodic band has a Bob Mould or a Paul Westerberg feel to the vocals and a thick, retro guitar sound." - Mere Exposure
"Unlike the torrent of record label samplers that one is barraged with on a daily basis, Deep Elm Unreleased No. 1 stands out not only because of the abundance of good bands, but also because all of these songs are exclusive. I can honestly say there is not one I skip, although I am partial to Blinders from Planes Mistaken For Stars and Seven Storey's track 6.8.2000. Still, my favorite comes from Triple Fast Action. All Better Now is an indie rock gem that I can't get out of my head. It's so good that I have been hunting for their back catalog. Pick this up; it is definitely worth it." - Abhor
"The theme of this compilation from Deep Elm is a collection previously unreleased songs, which isn't something you see everyday. Some memorable songs are 6.8.2000 by Seven Storey Mountain, Red Animal War's track Last Train Out, and Skin Deep Pretty by Five Eight. This is a must-have." - Dropout Digest
"On Unreleased No. 1, Deep Elm promises that everything is completely exclusive and you'll never find these songs anywhere else. My favorites on this album are the exceptional good tunes by Triple Fast Action, Pop Unknown and This Beautiful Mess. You Can't go wrong here." - Enough
"Unreleased No. 1 is here from Deep Elm with exclusive tracks from some of our indie rock heroes. All in all, ten wonderful tracks from some of Deep Elm's best bands. The only thing you will hear is music at its best. Really, a lovely compilation!" - Silent Stagnation
"Unreleased No. 1 is another fine compilation from Deep Elm. Ten songs on this record, and every one would fit just as well on band's full length. Simply listen to the new track by This Beautiful Mess and you will agree. Here are some great songs that will only be available here." - Voice Of Reason
LYRICS:
Blinders
i found this outside you. the road to your room is half as long as my list of regrets. i count my seconds inside you and struggle to find. instead i fall and i wrecked us all
6.8.2000
what thousand. uncertain number. just a matter of an uncertain place in time. in a doctrine of steady decline. and they took a blind eye to and eminent concern. getting caught in the details too numerous to discern. in a teaching of lessons man's not quick enough to learn. the sand stream falls a fixed path down the hours glass. we've tried to define in a trivial guessing game. inquisitor destined to find. come march in step around the newest of machines. the perfect predecessor to a drastic change. if it's the dawning of the quickening of time. and all the trivial will cease to be. i guess that number really ain't so bad. come watch the ascent as we're breaking through the clouds. and the valley below turns to a flaming ghost town. the narrow escape still discretion's crown. horizon like a dawning. inappropriate time to see the sun. with neither side winning. or shooting a gun
Last Train Out
check the mic. the mic feeds back and feedback's bad. even time has it's right and right is stacked. when you knew. that we never could be true. after all the things we do. you will have to hold me. this could be my last train out. taint your light. soak these walls and teeter punch-drunk. cracked and dry. hard i'll slide down into. let's go. black the sky. purge your heart of these demons. i care. lift and fly. sight i swear. i swear you'll find
Optimist Club
last time is so far it's gone. it's been a little while. since you and i all alone. do you still hear what i still say. and if you don't answer. does that mean i'm not okay. this time is all that i know. rewinding the last time. i'm perfecting this loss. and making all the wrong decisions. i won't listen. i'm falling further again. standing on the edge of something. always looking in from here. feeling all along i'm failing. will i ever go. round and round and down. i'm falling deeper into my mistakes. i will never be the same. but will i ever change
All Better Now
it's in my heart. it's all better now. pick myself up off the ground. because i knew i could. and i knew i should. so come on just gather round. cause it's all better now. so stand up tall. cause it's all better now. see it all. it's in my heart. it's all better now. all the angels have come down. to kiss and tell me. to touch and quell me. to hold me to my word. calm me down. sit my ass right back down
New Found Friends
walked her into the corridor. his friends had never seen her. her fears were not knowing. was she dying now. and oh she faced them and they smiled at her. they welcomed her there willingly. his friends had always been there. her fears were no longer. was she flying now. she's okay with herself. and her new found friends
Skin Deep Pretty
everyone wishes they were young. young enough you know it's true. they
all want to be like you. if your best day's still to come. and even your mother wants to be your best friend. but she'll never be. because all her history took something away. you wanna tell her to act her age. cause page one can tell heaven or hell. and you know we will place our bets. they'll be no regrets. no arguments. and now you know we can kinda tell. skin deep pretty. when you're young you think you know everywhere you want to go. and take it with you to the show. and the best one has his chance. you stole them all with a shaky hand. will you watch the children for me. will you be my arms for me. will you take me with you when you've gone away. everyone wishes they were fun. and luckier than all who know. the view that they wanna see. staring back at the ground. you wanna tell me that i'm your friend. so come as you are. cause you're a star
Hated
they´re still fighting it out in the trench towns. people worry they might take it to town. well i've been working all night trying to make mine alright. still the pain left in my eyes. learn to sleep with the blues. let those heartaches remain. bring them down to the grave. hated all your life. hated you don't want to live no more. trashed and battered on the floor. we tried so hard just to get across to you. we always end up with nothing more to do. everything's gone wrong and they blame it all on you. it was no accident. had to check your diary. it was in self-defense. had to see what´s in it for me. feel it´s my right to know. just as everyone. tore down the factories. keeps us from plundering
Ice Skating
i don't need your company. i don't need your sympathy. i don't need your apathy. i don't need your sympathy. well it's safe to say. it's times like these. where i'm not me. and i'm not anyone. it's only me. love gets in the way. stand and count out
Unsuitable For Any Melody But Yours
who are you to me. your melodies ring in my head. how could i express. i pale into insignificance. beside you. what am i to you. is there room for me in your heart. if we had met before. would i still be building castles in the air. and you serenade me. with the sweetest of songs. and you complete me. with all your melodies. who are we to you. we can't do this on our own. do you have a plan. we run into each other. again and again. let's pretend to be good friends
