In America, a life is lost to suicide every 18 minutes...nearly 30,000 people each year. And every minute, another attempt is made...that's 1,500 attempts per day. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people 15 to 24 years of age. Nearly all people (90%) who die by suicide have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder (clinical or manic depression) that is treatable. Therefore, most suicides can be prevented. That's the good news, as long as you get involved. Suicidal teens give warning of their intentions, so the most effective way to prevent a friend or loved one from taking their life is to recognize when someone is at risk, take the warning signs seriously and know how to respond. TOO YOUNG TO DIE was created by Deep Elm and its Artists to provide education, increase recognition and prevent youth suicide. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of CD samplers, tickets and merchandise will be donated to The American Foundation For Suicide Prevention, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing our knowledge of suicide and our ability to prevent it. Deep Elm's TOO YOUNG TO DIE sampler CD contains a Suicide Prevention Guide that could help you save a friend or loved one, plus lots of facts and information about suicide and depression. Previously available only at Hot Topic retail stores, the sampler is slated for worldwide release on August 11, 2003. The sampler features 19 songs by The Appleseed Cast, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Brandtson, Benton Falls, Red Animal War, Desert City Soundtrack, Surrounded, Settlefish, Camber, Cross My Heart, Pop Unknown, White Octave, Lewis, David Singer & The Sweet Science and Slowride. Each song was hand-picked for lyrics that promote hope, faith, perseverance and survival as well as the understanding that you're not alone in feelings of depression, loneliness and doubt. The first annual TOO YOUNG TO DIE Tour took place from March 14 through April 1, 2003 and featured Brandtson, Red Animal War, Desert City Soundtrack, Settlefish, and David Singer. Thirty-one cities were visited on the tour route including Dallas, Austin, Wichita Falls, Tulsa, Warrensburg, Omaha, Cedar Falls, Rockford, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Rochester, Syracuse, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, Richmond, Chapel HiIl, Charlotte, Savannah, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Orlando, Athens, Nashville, Cincinnati, Chicago, Urbana, Kansas City and Oklahoma City. The next tour will hit the West Coast. If one of your friends is depressed, withdrawn or talking about ending their life, tell someone, tell anyone...even if you have to break their trust. It's definitely worth telling someone because it's better to lose a friendship than your friend. Suicide shouldn't be a secret. Visit the AFSP website to educate yourself about suicide prevention. You could help save a life, maybe even YOURS...
